Welcome to Science Center for Materials Design and Application

Head of the group: Professor Dr. Yong Du (Homepage)

Welcome Speech

Science Center for Material Design and Application at Central South University was established by Prof. Yong Du after he returned China in February, 2003. Currently, the center consists of 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant and 21 postgraduate students. The three academicians in China (Prof. Baiyun Huang, Prof. Zhanpeng Jin and Prof. Peiyun Huang) are appointed as the academic consultants of the center.

The main research fields of the science center cover thermodynamics, phase diagram, diffusion and interfacial reaction, determination and computer simulation of materials performance, microstructure evolution simulation, application of gradient coating technology and so on. The center has establishes the close cooperative relationships with University of Vienna (Austria), Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Thermo-Calc software company (Sweden), Montan unirersitat Leoben (Auselia), Clausthal University of Technology (Germany), Max–Planck–Institut für Eisenforschung (Germany), Materials Science International Team (Germany), University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), Pennsylvania State University (USA) and Illinois Institute of Technology (USA).

The science center pays great attention to the cultivation of the students’ scientific literacy as well as their ability of studying independently. Since the establishment of this center, 12 postgraduate or doctoral students have been sent abroad for advanced studies based on its widely academic platform. Two doctoral candidates (Hailin Chen and Zhu Pan) and two postgraduate students (Wei Xiong and Shuhong Liu) have worked on phase diagram and crystal structure in Physical Chemistry Research Institute, University of Vienna for about 6 months in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In 2007, one Ph.D. candidate (Lijun Zhang) was invited to Illinois Institute of Technology in USA to study the high-temperature calorimetry for about half a month.

To create more successful prospects for the students in our center, we establish the close cooperative relationships with many domestic and international institutions, and do receive many supports from them. The graduates from our center are appreciated by the worldwide research institutes and companies. In 2008, Two Ph.D. candidates, Li Chen and Wei Xiong, were admitted to study in Leoben University, Austria, and Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, respectively. One doctor graduating from this center is doing the post-doctoral research in Max–Planck–Institut für Eisenforschung, and another one is in Freiberg-University of technology in Germany.

Our center not only sponsors students to attend the academic conferences at home and abroad, but also recommends students to apply for the grants from various international organizations. In 2007, one doctoral student, Wei Xiong, took part in the First Sino-German Symposium on Computational Thermodynamics and Kinetics and their Applications to Solidification, and received the best paper award. In 2008, another Ph.D. candidate, Lijun Zhang, was granted for the STT scholarship from the international Foundation for Applied Thermodynamics in order to attend the international CALPHADXXXVII conference held in Finland. In 2007, Ph.D candidate S. H. Liu received the APDIC (Alloy Phase Digram International Committe) best paper award.

In order to create the good scientific research environment for the outstanding undergraduate students, our science center selects a group of excellent undergraduate students to participate in our training courses of scientific researches every year. In addition, the science center also encourages the undergraduate student to be engaged in some scientific research work in their leisure time as the step platform of their future scientific research. The bachelor theses of two undergraduate students, Wei Xiong and Lijun Zhang, were chosen as the outstanding bachelor papers of Central South University. Over the years, nearly all the bachelor theses in this center have been published as academic papers in various international high-quality journals.

We sincerely expected the excellent undergraduate and graduate students from the domestic universities and research institutions to join our team, displaying your own talent and composing your brilliant life!
